Wes Craven on Cursed

Director Wes Craven recently talked to Sci Fi Wire about three projects, including the troubled werewolf movie Cursed. Craven says that many of the film's scenes will have to be reshot, and possibly recast, when the film resumes production in November.

He added that makeup guru Rick Baker has retired, turning over responsibility for the film's werewolf makeup to KNB. "I haven't seen that hit the news yet, but he shut down his studio. All of the elements have been taken over by KNB for us."

Filming had commenced for 11 weeks before Dimension Films stopped production in June and ordered a script rewrite. "Quite an extraordinary amount of new material is going to be shot, and a lot of material is going to be thrown away."

Wes Craven was also working on bringing the video game American McGee's Alice and his own novel Fountain Society to the big screen for Dimension, but he now says those projects are pretty much dead.

"[We] never got a script that Dimension liked," he says about "Alice", a dark retelling of Alice in Wonderland. "So it's been pushed way back on the back burner."

Meanwhile, Fountain Society, his story about cloning in the future, also had script problems. The studio wasn't interested in the philosophical issues raised by a story about an old scientist's brain transplanted into his young clone's body. "A large part of it was about the continuing relationship with his wife, who remained old," he said. "It kind of turned us into a movie that was just basically a chase movie, and we were never really able to get to the point where we were all enthusiastic about it."

NineMSN reports that a set and props for what would have been writer/director Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain are being auctioned off this week. Brad Pitt dropped out of the project last year to go film Troy instead. Here's a taste of the article...

A 10-storey-high Aztec temple built for Brad Pitt and Inca costumes that should have been worn by Cate Blanchett will be auctioned on the Gold Coast this week, ending any hope of resurrecting one of the biggest films ever planned for Australia.

Darren Aronofsky's $US100 million ($A153 million) science fiction adventure The Fountain had begun pre-production on the Gold Coast when Pitt suddenly withdrew from the project a year ago.

However, before The Fountain's collapse producers had spent an estimated $A18 million, some of it building elaborate sets and creating amazing costumes.

Any hope The Fountain could be revived at a later date will be dealt a final blow on Tuesday with the auction.

The centrepiece of the film - a high-rise Aztec temple - is included in 800 movie set lots that will go under the auctioneer's hammer.

Variety reports the following:

"Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" scribes Michael Ferris and John Brancato will be back to back with the big guy. The duo will write "Westworld," the Warner Bros.-based remake that will be produced by Jerry Weintraub and Schwarzenegger.
The scribe team got sole script credit for "T3" and shared story credit with Tedi Sarafian. They also rewrote "Catwoman," a Pitof-directed film at WB to star Halle Berry.

WB, which will distribute "T3" domestically for financier Intermedia, liked the scribes enough to bring them back for a third high profile project. The studio and Weintraub hope they can write fast enough to make "Westworld" the next star vehicle for Schwarzenegger, who will not be playing the Yul Brynner role of the robotic gunfighter who turns the Old West vacation into a nightmare for a group of wannabe gunslinger tourists. Schwarzenegger will instead play one of the vacation guests. Pic was based on Michael Crichton's novel.

"It is the same idea, but this Westworld will be a much bigger place," said Weintraub. "Hopefully, we get it made as Arnold's next one, before he's governor. Though it would heighten the tension if he were visiting Westworld as the governor of California," Weintraub joked.

Synopsis:
Sydney Bristow is not your typical graduate student. While going to school, she also works for a top secret CIA division called �SD-6�. Her work as a secret agent requires her to fly to exotic locations, fight vicious enemies, get dressed in various disguises, and make death-defying escapes. The only rule that SD-6 has for Syd is that she not tell anyone about the organization. This is not much of a problem for her since she is estranged from her father, her mother is dead, and her friends suspect nothing.

When her boyfriend Danny proposes to her, though, she feels obligated to tell him the truth. She reveals her secret life as a spy. Unfortunately, SD-6 finds out about this and has Danny brutally assassinated. Shocked and horrified, Sydney�s life is shattered. This is also her first clue that something�s not right with SD-6. When she tries to leave the organization, they attempt to assassinate her, too. When her father, Jack Bristow, comes to her rescue, she finds out that he is also an agent for SD-6. He reveals that SD-6 is not a CIA organization at all. In fact, it�s an enemy spy organization that the CIA is fighting.

With her world turned upside down, Syd turns to the real CIA for help. There she meets Agent Michael C. Vaughn who recruits her as a double agent. He also tells her that her father is already working for them as a double agent. After rejoining SD-6, Syd starts working to take down the organization from the inside and get revenge for the murder of her fianc�e. Her investigations also lead her to the �Rambaldi Prophecy�. This Renaissance document not only correctly predicts the future, but it has plans for a device that could give the owner ultimate power. With SD-6 and the CIA after it, it�s up to Sydney to save the day.

Alias � The First Season is unrated, but it has a US TV rating of �TV 14 VSL�.

The Movie:
I saw the first couple of episodes of Alias when it first came out, but due to other distractions I didn�t see many more episodes afterwards. It�s easily one of the best series on TV and I thoroughly enjoyed what I saw. However, it was next to impossible to keep track with the show and the story soon got beyond a point where I could pick it back up again. Now, with the first season released on DVD, I can go back and watch the first 22 episodes at my own pace.

As already mentioned, this TV series is one of the best out there. If you�re a fan of James Bond or even Buffy The Vampire Slayer, then this show will be right up your alley. Every episode is jam packed with action, suspense, exotic locations, and dramatic twists and turns. It�s a first class production all the way. The costumes look great, the stunts look cool, the hand-to-hand combat is well choreographed, and the acting is superb.

Alias is the show that made Jennifer Garner a real star. Not only is she beautiful, but she�s a good actress that only gets better through the series. She has the extremely difficult role of not only being the lead star of the show, but the main actor doing most of the stunts. Garner handles all of the action well and her fight work is truly impressive. She�s really the one that makes this show worth watching. A great supporting cast backs her up.

Overall, it�s a great TV show and it�s worth checking it out on DVD. You�ll see why the show has been nominated for multiple awards and why Jennifer won a Golden Globe award for best actress in a television series.

The Extras:
While fans new to the series will be kept busy just watching the TV shows, there�s plenty here to keep established fans of the series happy, too. The extras can be found on the sixth and first discs. Here are some of the highlights:

Pilot production diary � This is essentially a �Making Of The Pilot� documentary. It looks like footage from someone�s home movies spliced together into a 15-minute or so video. You�ll see Garner training for the fight scenes, J.J. Abrams figuring out how he�s going to set up shots, and more. The producer of the series also pops in and talks about what it was like putting the pilot together. It�s a pretty interesting feature.

Deleted scenes � There are 6 deleted scenes on this DVD. Most of them feature the relationship between Will and Syd. The scenes aren�t pivotal to the plots of the shows, but they do add a little more depth to the characters. There�s also one scene with Sloane where he reveals that he has set up ways to reveal SD-6 should anything ever happen to him.

�Inside Stunts� � The stunt coordinators for the show discuss how they did some of the bigger stunts in the show including a jump from a tower, a jump from a cliff, a car falling into water, a few explosions, and more. They also get in-depth into how they coordinate the fight scenes and how they practice for them. Proper credit is also given to Jennifer Garner�s stunt double, though they repeatedly state how Garner does as many of the stunts as she can on her own. It�s another cool extra on the DVD.

Gag reel � Most of these bloopers feature the cast flubbing lines or breaking into uncontrollable laughter. I thought there would be more accidents from the fight scenes, but there really weren�t that many. It�s still a fun feature.

Audio commentaries � Only four of the episodes have commentaries. The pilot has a commentary by J.J. Abrams and Jennifer Garner. Abrams dishes out a ton of trivia about the series and many factoids that you�d never know. Garner seems to declare every scene her favorite, but she also provides some great behind the scenes thoughts. If you�re a fan of the series, you�ll want to hear this. Episode 17, which is primarily a flashback episode, also has commentary from other cast members. The final episode in season one features a commentary by all the principal cast members including Garner, Garber, Vartan, and the others.

Special season 2 preview � This is a sneak peek at the second season. It reveals a lot about what happens, so you might not want to see it if you want to be surprised. Expect this to arrive on DVD soon as well.

The Bottom Line:
If you�re a fan of James Bond, Charlie�s Angels, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, then this is a DVD set you�ll want to check out. If you�re an established fan of Alias, then this is a DVD set you�ll be required to add to your collection.

Here's a holiday gift idea for the spy who has everything, including a license to kill.

MGM Home Entertainment is releasing all 20 of the James Bond films together in three special-edition gift sets Nov. 18.

Volume 1, which includes seven titles, was released in October and will be repromoted and released together with Volumes 2 and 3 in November.

The gift sets are priced at $124.96 each (preorder Oct. 21), and each title gets the full features treatment, including commentaries, documentaries and various featurettes, music videos, theatrical trailers, storyboards and other material.

MGM said all Bond titles, except "Die Another Day," are scheduled to go into moratorium Jan. 19 for an indefinite period.

Originally, MGM had planned to come out with only Volume 2 this year, but the response to Volume 1 prompted the creation of a major Bond package for this holiday season, according to the company.

"Volume 1 was timed around the release of 'Die Another Day,' and it had huge awareness and was a tremendous success," said Amy Zwagerman, director of library marketing at MGM Home Entertainment, so MGM decided to go with all three volumes "and capitalize on the holiday shopping season."

The three sets will be supported by a multimillion-dollar marketing campaign that includes national TV advertising across prime-time programming and major sporting events as well as a national print campaign in general-interest and lifestyle publications and radio promotion in the top 20 markets, MGM said.

MGM will be working closely with Electronic Arts in the fourth quarter, when EA introduces the Bond-themed "Everything or Nothing" video game, so that the two companies can effectively coordinate their marketing campaigns to generate maximum buzz, Zwagerman said. Also in the works is a Bond movie marathon on cable timed around the retail window of the gift sets.

Included in Volume 1 are "Dr. No," "GoldenEye," "Goldfinger," "License to Kill," "The Man With the Golden Gun," "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "Tomorrow Never Dies."

Volume 2 includes "From Russia With Love," "You Only Live Twice," "Diamonds Are Forever," "Moonraker," "For Your Eyes Only," "The Living Daylights" and "The World Is Not Enough."

Volume 3 includes "Thunderball," "Octopussy," "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," "Die Another Day," "Live and Let Die" and "A View to a Kill."

Synopsis:
This film is based on the book by the same name.

Tia and Tony are two orphans with mysterious powers. They are able to communicate telepathically and move things with their minds. However, they remember very little of their past. They don�t remember what happened to their parents or how they got their powers.

One day they use their powers to save Lucas Deranian. He is astounded by what they are able to do. Little do Tia and Tony know that he�s part of a criminal organization. Lucas arranges to take care of the children and he starts his plans to use their powers to commit crimes. As the kids begin to realize what he�s up to, they also have a revelation about their past � they are aliens.

Their parents crash-landed on earth and the kids were the only survivors. Now they must make their way to Witch Mountain where their other alien family members will pick them up and take them home. First they must escape the clutches of Lucas and his superiors. The only hope for Tia and Tony lay with Jason, an elderly man on the road with a camper.

The Movie:
Escape To Witch Mountain is yet another Disney film that I grew up with. I really enjoyed it and the story is still great today. You can see what makes it great because elements of today�s popular films are easily seen within it. There are similarities between this film and Harry Potter, E.T., and other popular films. Children love imagining they have super powers, encountering aliens, and being the hero that saves the day. These films have all of that.

The cast is great. The children, played by Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann are perfect. They look like real life siblings though they aren�t related at all. They represented the every-kid that children could all relate to. Donald Pleasence has always been a classic villain while Eddie Albert is one of the great character actors of film. Together they all make an excellent cast of characters for the story.

About the only things that don�t hold up today are the special effects. The scenes with green screen look particularly bad, though the effects done with wires manage to withstand the test of time and they still look good. The music, though, is another victim of aging.

This film inspired the sequel, Return From Witch Mountain. I think it might be cool for Disney to make a sequel to these films rather than yet another remake of their older films. It would certainly be interesting to catch up with these characters so many years later. I think there�s a lot of story potential there.

The Extras:
I think Disney continues to do a first-rate job of reissuing their older films. The extras on this DVD continue to follow the trend. The menus are also pretty cool with a comic book look to them. Here are some highlights from the extras:

Commentary by director John Hough and Actors Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann � This is a fun commentary to listen to. As Richards and Eisenmann watch the film, it seems like old friends watching home movies for the first time in quite a while. It�s a treat to hear them reminisce about their experiences on set and laugh about their acting and youthful looks. It�s obvious that Hough�s commentary was recorded at a later date as the three never interact in the commentary. This is a fun commentary to listen to and one worth checking out.

Making The Escape � This is a 20-minute �Making Of� video. It�s great to see the kids all grown up. (Kim Richards shows a picture of her numerous kids!) Ike Eisenmann gets particularly emotional talking about how people still come up to him today thanking him for the film. They discuss the effects, the challenges of bring the film to screen, shooting at a real orphanage, and more. It�s a very interesting and thorough look at the making of the film.

Conversations With John Hough � This is a short interview with the director. He talks about how he got into film, how he came on board with Walt Disney, and more. It�s a short feature but an interesting piece of cinema history.

Classic Disney Cartoon - Plutos' Dream House � This cartoon was shown before the theatrical release of the movie, so it is included again here on the DVD. It�s quite a nice little treat to be added.

Lost Treasure: "Disney Effects, Something Special" Featurette � This is a great documentary on the making of the effects for Escape To Witch Mountain as well as some of the effects from other films. Matte paintings are a big topic of discussion and they show some of the bigger ones done for 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Dick Tracy, and more. It�s a fun feature for anyone interested in special effects.

1975 Disney Studio Album "Disney Sci-Fi" � This is a series of clips from Disney�s sci-fi films including TRON, The Rocketeer, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, and even Armageddon.

The Bottom Line:
Overall, this is another good reissue that I think both children and adults can enjoy together. It�s a worthy addition to your DVD collection.

Then Chris looks for Nola laboriously, and he revives the passion that feels for the American, this way Chris is amid an enormous pressure, coming from the work, of his relationship with Nola and of his wife's necessity of having a son. Finally, Nola leaves pregnant and she begins to press Chris so that he abandones Chloe, the retired tennis player has to make a difficult decision that will take him to extreme situations and a fatal destination for the young actress. Again the random, the good luck, allows Chris to stay free of this difficult situation, again the ball hits in the net and it falls in the rival's land. Baz Luhrmann Gives Alexander the Great

Director Baz Luhrmann has given an update on his Alexander the Great project which will star Leonardo DiCaprio and Nicole Kidman. He says he will start filming next September, despite the fact that Oliver Stone's Untitled Alexander the Great Project is already filming.

"I think you might want to see that [Stone's film] but it's not much of a stretch of the imagination to imagine mine's going to be different," he told BBCi Films, adding, "I never do anything on anyone else's schedule and I make things when I'm ready, basically."

In the meantime he's directing what he calls "a one minute movie" and everyone else calls "a pretentious commercial" for a perfumer. It'll star Nicole Kidman.

Don Rhymer Rewriting Paramount's Honeymooners

Don Rhymer has been hired to rewrite Paramount Pictures/Deep River Prods.' feature film The Honeymooners, an urban version of the classic TV series with Cedric the Entertainer and Mike Epps toplining in the Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton roles, respectively.

The studio hired Rhymer to retool the script in an attempt to bring the film's original $35 million budget down to a range of $25 million-$30 million.

The move, which will push the film's start date from December to early next year, is said to come on the heels of what the studio deems a disappointing boxoffice performance of its most recent urban feature, The Fighting Temptations, starring Cuba Gooding Jr., Beyonce Knowles and Epps.

The pilot catches his leg in the anchor rope, while the only passenger, a boy, is too scared to jump down. Joe and three other men rush to secure the basket. Just as they secure the balloon, the wind rushes into the field, and at once the rescuers are airborne. Joe manages to drop to the ground, as do most of his companions, but one man is lifted skywards. As Joe, Claire and the other rescuers watch this strangely beautiful sight, they see the man fall to his death. Recalling the day's events at dinner with his friends Robin and Rachel, Joe reveals the impact the accident has had on his battered psyche. Ironically the balloon eventually lands safely, the boy unscathed. But fate has far more unpleasant things in store for Joe. Going to retrieve the body of the fallen man with fellow rescuer Jed Parry, for example, turns out to be a very bad move. Jed feels an instant connection with Joe--one that, as the weeks go by, becomes ever more intense.

Tom Sizemore, Gabriel Mann and newcomer Jake Muxworthy have joined the independent Piggy Banks for director Morgan J. Freeman. The project starts filming today in Salt Lake City.

The dark drama centers on two brothers (Muxworthy and Mann) who are raised to be criminals like their father (Sizemore) and to think of people as piggy banks, ready to be broken whenever they need anything. They wind up roaming the country living a life devoid of intimacy, responsibility and direction. Problems arise when Muxworthy's character grows tired of the lifestyle only to find unexpected purpose with the discovery of a half sister.

Matthew Modine and Tom Arnold are also in talks to round out the cast.

Scooper 'outonthetiles' tells us that the UK got a first look at Universal Pictures' big screen adaptation of the Thunderbirds, from director Jonathan Frakes and starring Bill Paxton, Ben Kingsley, Brady Corbet, Anthony Edwards and Sophia Myles.

Here in Britain today there is a BBC programme called Breakfast, which just showed an exclusive preview on the new Thunderbirds movie.

A reporter was in the offices where the CG was being done, which takes up 3 stories of the producers building.

The main feature in the preview was an exclusive clip of Thunderbird 3 launching from the new-look Tracey Island. Instead of coming out of the swimming pool, there was a large space-age looking structure which was like a huge ring being supported by long legs.....hope you get the idea. Anyway this stucture slowly 'opened up' to reveal Thunderbird 3 rocketing out, blasting into the sky giving a cool view of Tracey Island - the CG here was really mindblowing, I'd say this clip will appear in trailers. This 15 second clip took 6 months to make.

The rest of the feature was the reporter speaking to one of the chief programmers, and they discussed how the CG effects were made (eg the reflections on the clip shown were hand painted), and also how it was another hollywood blockbuster using british special effects, and how the film will re-establish britian's great special FX reputation.

Very cool to hear. The movie is set to launch next summer.
